Franz Kafka, was born on July 3, 1883, Prague, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic) and died on June 3, 1924, Kierling, near Vienna, Austria, Franz Kafka was a German language writer of novels and short stories. His work, which fuses elements of realism and the fantastic, typically features isolated protagonists faced by bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensive social bureaucratic powers, and has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt and absurdity. His best known works include Die Verwandlung (1915; The Metamorphosis), Der Process (1925; The Trial), and Das Schloss (1926; The Castle).
