Herman Melville was an American writer best known for his novels about the sea, such as Moby-Dick or The Whale which was released in 1851.
Herman Melville was born in 1819 in NYC. His early novels Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847) were written after his years at sea, telling the stories of his journey. Later works include Moby-Dick, which is considered his best work and by the 1860s Melville had turned to poetry. After his death in New York City in 1891, he began to be widely seen as one of the great American writers.
