Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, journalist, philosopher and essayist. He is considered to be one of the greatest writers in world literature and one of the preeminent thinkers in existentialism. He is best known for his novels Crime and Punishment (1866) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880). Dostoyevsky's literary career began with the publication of Poor Folk in 1846. This was followed by The Double (1846), The Gambler (1867) and The Idiot (1868). His first novel, Poor Folk, marked the start of his great period of creativity; it also established him as one of Russia's leading writers.
