The Sunlit Man: A Cosmere Novel (Secret Projects Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 3,688 ratings

From the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time—#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel that combines fantasy and science fiction. Illustrated by Ernanda Souza, Nabeste Zitro, and kudriaken.

Running. Putting distance between himself and the relentless Night Brigade has been Nomad’s strategy for years. Staying one or two steps ahead of his pursuers by skipping through the Cosmere from one world to the next.

But now, his powers too depleted to escape, Nomad finds himself trapped on Canticle, a planet that will kill anyone who doesn’t keep moving. Fleeing the fires of a sunrise that melts the very stones, he is instantly caught up in the struggle between a heartless tyrant and the brave rebels who defy him.

Failure means a quick death, incinerated by the sun…or a lifetime as a mindless slave. Tormented by the consequences of his past, Nomad must fight not only for his survival—but also for his very soul.

Note from Brandon:
I sincerely believe that books don’t live until they’re read. While I would write even if no one were reading—it’s who I am—I thrive because I know the stories are being brought to life by all of you. In this, stories are a special kind of art, particularly when written down. Each of you will imagine this book, and its characters, a little differently—you will each put your own stamp on it, making it yours. I don’t believe a story is quite finished until that has happened—until the dream in my head has become a reality (even if briefly) in yours.

And so this book is yours, as they all are once you read them. Thank you so much for bringing life to my work, and to the Cosmere.

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

Sun Dive into a Lethally Fun Story!
Out of all the Secret Projects in the Year of Sanderson lineup, The Sunlit Man had me hooked from the get-go. Why? Well, I've always been a sucker for magic-based sci-fi, probably thanks to my teenage love for RIFTS and Shadowrun. The Sunlit Man delivers on that front, plunging us into a world where the sun is a deadly force, compelling society to live on the move. Nomad, the story's main character, adds another layer of intrigue with his mysterious Torment. Sanderson's world-building skills are on full display here, showing us a society that's had to get really creative to survive its harsh environment. And for those of us who can't get enough of the Stormlight Archive, this book offers a fresh yet connected experience. Toss in the weirdness of Threnody, and you've got a story that's not just compelling but also a quick read. If you're into suspense, ethical dilemmas, and exploring how extreme settings can shape entire civilizations, I can't recommend this one enough!

I am a big fan of the Stormlight Archives and this fits in as a nice additional tale. The main character has a great arc over the short novel. A fun read.

I loved this book and was surprised how fast I moved through it. This book has so many great connections to the Cosmere and the current series Brandon is writing. This felt more like a sci fi book than a pure epic fantasy and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was marvelously paced and can’t wait for more.

I need to read more of the Cosmere. Im hearing that I'm missing a lot of connections to previous books by Sanderson. Regardless, a fun read.

One of the best things about a Sanderson book is the outside of the box thinking and unique world building. This is my favorite of the secret projects books. I honestly kinda want a whole series on this. Well done!

Brandon has done it again. He’s a genius. I highly recommend this book. Especially if you are a fan of the cosmere.

This book was probably my least favorite of the secret novels. Not to say I disliked it, it just didn't appeal to me like the others. It was exciting, thrilling, and fun to read, and is I think best read by people familiar with the Cosmere. The mystery in who the character is was a driving force behind the book. I think I figured out who the character was too early, so what was maybe supposed to be a huge shock, but to me was more of a, "heh, I knew it" moment when it was finally just stated.
I'm sure you'll enjoy this book if you like the Cosmere. It's action packed and full of the wonder of a Sanderson world. Enjoy it! it was still difficult to put down and I finished it in maybe a little over a week.

Sanderson wrote another hit! I love this story. I want to know more about how thr main character got to where he is in the future in this novel from where he is right now. If you have read all of the current Stormlight Archive books you will connect the dots in this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't touch it
Reviewed in Germany on February 4, 2024
Well, if one goes for mixture of a story on the level of a Comic and Mad Max 3, you are welcome to read that masterpiece of deus ex machina and discrepancies. If you expect something on the level of the more serious cosmere novels, don't even touch it. In the age of radar airships are hiding in clouds and, oh surprise, nearly crashes happily together, firearms which are in use to blow brains out are totally forgotten sometimes and as superman gets a tantrum with a bo kata all evil runs screaming away. The story lost completely all sense in dealing with that fast turning heatball of a world, one may know as an idea from Rittick. Even a triple Aunty Entity can't save it, but one point for the pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A grand day out

Imagine Wallace was a nomadic cosmerenaut, Gromit was a spren, the moon was a burning planet and made of magma instead of cheese and this is essentially a retelling of the classic stop motion story.

Would read again.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing story!
Reviewed in Canada on March 26, 2024
The action catches you right from the first page and never stops. A story of a character, who also has his own amazing story revealed. As always a great world building novel with amazing and complex characters with an unpredictable ending that you realize you should’ve saw coming if you had only paid a bit more attention. But then again, you get so caught up in the story, how could you recall that one detail that would be so important?

A significant advancement in the Cosmere, woohoo!

An interesting world, another magic system, and some interesting threads to the rest of the Cosmere.

A great addition to the canon
